Using a StyleWriter II Under System 6
> Tonight I've been trying to help a friend integrate a Stylewriter 2 with a Mac Classic. The Classic is running System 6.0.8. (upgraded tonight from 6.0.7) and has 2.5 Megs of RAM. [...tried CSW 1500 driver...]
> The install disk said no, not enough Ram (4 Megs required). I have tried, without success to find a driver specifically for the Stylewriter 2, and, feeling a little winded at this point, thought I should consult the experts.
As most of the experts are probably sleeping right now, I'll answer in their place as I went through similar recently (getting a
SWII to work with a 6.0.8 LC.)
> 1. Can you print on a Stylewriter 2 using a Mac Classic?
I don't have a Classic, but I'll say yes.
> 2. Assuming you can, what is the appropriate driver?
> 3. Where/how can I obtain the driver, hopefully free of charge?
Hit ftp.info.apple.com and grab the Grayshare Update and Truetype extension (and fonts too, unless you like that jagged look.)
/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/
Macintosh/Printing/Other_Printing/GrayShare_Update_1.0.sea.bin
This includes the SWII extension and the updated Chooser you need for it.
(If I remember correctly, you don't have to update the chooser, but you'll then get an error message every time you use it.)
/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/
Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_6.0.x/TrueType/
Grab just about everything in this directory. Or at the very least,
TrueType_1.0.sea.bin and Font_DA_Mover_4.1.sea.bin.
You'll need the TT extension, And I believe this version of the Font/DA Mover is needed to install the GrayShare items above (and the fonts in this directory.) The fonts however don't come in suitcases, so you'll have to hold down the option key when you click on the open button in order to see them.
