 Mad With Macintosh

Setting Up Freewwweb On A Mac Plus or Up!

(if you are using a PowerMac, just follow the instructions on the freewwweb web site.)

Unfortunately Freewwweb was bought out by Juno in July 2000. Currently Juno doesn't support Macs or Linux.

You'll have ot try another free internet provider with banners (there are currently none for 68k Macs)

Freewwweb is a free internet service with dialup connections in most US cities. It has NO advertising and supports Macs all the way back to the Plus and including iMacs and G4's. Here's how to set it up on a Mac using 'classic' networking (not Open Transport).

Freewwweb says they support 68030 Macs or above, but I was able to easily get my Mac Plus (68000) online with freewwweb. In fact, it was easier than using my local ISP on a Plus because there is no connect script with freewwweb. So, you should be able to get every Mac since the Plus (including the iMacs and G4's) online with freewwweb, as long as you have enough ram. See the freeewwweb web site for ram requirements and local dialup numbers. Some cities are not supported.

You'll need Config PPP, MacTCP and the PPP extension first as well as a browser and email application. See my classic Mac web page to download the entire kit that you'll need. You'll need 4 megs of ram and system 7.0 on your Mac.

First, if you already have an internet account (and you probably do because you are reading this on the web), go to

http://www.freewwweb.com

and click on the link that says "I already Have a Web Browser".

Freewwweb will ask you a few questions and credit card number (no they will not charge your card) and a username and password which you can decide on yourself. After you fill out all the required info, the browser will wait for about 2 minutes and then spit out a text file with all sorts of strange information on it.

Now you are ready to plug in this information into your PPP software.

Open the ConfigPPP control panel and click on the 'new' button. Type in 'freewwweb'. this is the internet provider you'll be using.

Now click on the Config button. Select 9600 or 19200 for the modem speed if you are using a Mac Plus, Classic, PowerBook 100 or Mac Portable (68000 chip Macs cannot connect faster than 19200). Choose non for flow control, tone dial, type in the freewwweb phone number that they gave you, then click on the authentication button and type in the username you chose and the password. Click the OK button then the Done button.

Now open MACTCP control panel. Click the 'more' button. On the Freewweb info sheet that they spit out to you when you signed up, you'll see

SITE_NAME FreeWWWeb.com

This goes into the box under "Domain". Put the IP Address int the box under 'IP Address'. Mine looks like this: Yours may vary.

216.70.64.1

under the freewwweb domain put a single period to indicate 'same as above'. Put this number in the IP Address box next to the period. Mine looks like this: Yours may vary.

216.70.64.2

This is the 'backup' IP address in case the first is down or overloaded.

now click on the 'Manually' button to the left of the window.

Now take the first IP address

216.70.64.1

and paste it into the 'Gateway address' box.

Make sure the Class is set to "c" at the top right of the window and the subnet mask should be

255.255.255.0.

Click OK and close MacTCP. Now make sure you dropped the PPP Extension onto the system folder and click OK when it asks you if you want to put it into the Extensions folder. Reboot the Mac.

After it reboots, open the ConfigPPP control panel and click on the 'Open' button to dial. You should now be on freewwweb!
