Why Don't Your Cigar Box Guitars have Sound Holes?
It's simple: my pickups are so hot that the sound holes make the guitar feed back. Yes if you move back from the amp and turn it down it sounds fine, but for most people this is not an option. I've made several cigar box guitars with sound holes and they aren't really an louder with them as acoustic instruments than they are without them. They are perfect as they are for recording, just put the mic near where the sound hole would be for optimum tone and volume. You can experiment to find the best mic placement. You can also mic them when playing live venues or use an acoustic amplifier.
"Soundholes enhance bass response. According to Helmhotz resonance theory, you would only need a soundhole the size of a quarter to emit proper bass in a cigar box guitar. Anything more is a waste of soundboard resonance. The natural gaps around the neck joint in a handmade cigar box guitar offer almost as much proper response anyway", Shane Speal, king of the cigar box guitar.
UPDATE: I do put small sound holes in my Little Mojo Fretless Acoustic CBG model because it's an acoustic guitar.
